When an abdominal aortic aneurysm is found and requires surgical intervention to prevent rupture, endovascular aneurysm repair is by far the top choice of vascular surgeons. This procedure can also be used to treat thoracic aortic aneurysms.

An aortic aneurysm is the ballooning of the aorta due to pressure, weakened aortic walls or a number of other causes. When an aneurysm occurs in the chest portion of the aorta it is classified as a thoracic aortic aneurysm, when it occurs in the abdomen it is an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Regardless of where in the aorta, should an aneurysm rupture it is almost always a life threatening condition, so early detection and treatment is important.

Endovascular aneurysm repair is a minimally invasive procedure that takes place within the veins. During this procedure a surgeon deploys a graft, or tube of metal mesh and fabric, above and below an aneurysm to prevent rupture. The graft that repairs the aneurysm is typically inserted in the femoral artery using a catheter, guide wire and small camera. Your vascular surgeon will use a catheter to guide the device to the aneurysm where it will expand to the width of the vein to fit snugly. The newly deployed graft allows blood to pass without putting pressure on the aortic aneurysm, preventing rupture.

Not all aortic aneurysms are likely to rupture and require surgery. Endovascular aneurysm repair is a major surgery and should only be considered when the risk of the aneurysm rupturing is greater than the risk of the surgery. Not all aneurysms can be treated with endovascular stent grafting. Depending on the location, dimensions of the aneurysm and other risk factors, some patients may benefit from other treatment options. Your vascular surgeon can conduct diagnostic testing and best determine your treatment options if you have an aortic aneurysm.
